Friends in Christ Weekly Message
February 23, 2013

[NOTE: This message was originally published January 26, 2002.]
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 27:1 (King James Version)

This oft-quoted passage focuses on the most basic of issues, in whom or what do we place our faith, in the context of the question of fear, one of the most basic of human emotions. It is a theme I know I need to come back to time and again.

Even for those of us who claim faith in Christ, we find ourselves tempted to put our faith in other things - or we find our faith weak. We are tempted to find our security in the things of this world - material possessions, security systems, armies, etc. These things of the world have in common that they are not failsafe. They can not offer us ultimate security.

The psalmist David at times had these things to a greater extent than anyone else in his time. But at other times he had little of these things. He did not find freedom from fear in the things and methods of this world.

But even in his darkest hours when he was most alone and vulnerable, David found what, or rather whom, he could turn to - the Lord. He found that, trusting in the Lord, he did not need to fear the most powerful of enemies. The secret of freedom from fear he found was total and utter dependence on the Lord as his light, his salvation (which, in this context, is primarily in this world), the strength of his life.

In prayer, we each need to examine ourselves. Am I putting all my faith in the Lord as my light, my salvation, the strength of my life? Have I allowed the Lord to take away all my fears?

Bill Samuel
