Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the LORD and with the people.
1 Samuel 2:26 (NRSV*)

And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.
Luke 2:52 (NRSV*)

In looking at the Lectionary readings for this Sunday, I was struck by the parallel between these two passages. While the wording is not identical, the meaning is almost exactly the same.

This is one aspect of the Incarnation. In becoming human like us, Jesus also went through the same stages of development as we do. His divine wisdom may have been in some way inherent in him, but it had to go through the same kind of development as our wisdom does in order to come to fruition.

In this Christmas season, the awesome gift of the Incarnation has been impressed upon me more powerfully than ever before. We need to be ever thankful for this great gift from the one who loves us fully and completely.
