Friends in Christ Weekly Message
April 1, 2006

In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you'll have it forever, real and eternal.
If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me. Then you'll be where I am, ready to serve at a moment's notice. The Father will honor and reward anyone who serves me.

John 12:25-26 (Message*)

We naturally want to hold on to what we've got, especially if we have a comfortable life. But Jesus warns us that we will destroy it if we cling to it as it is.

Christ calls us to radical love and trust. He wants us to be reckless in our love, not giving a thought for our life. This, Jesus teaches us, is the way to have real life eternally.

This reckless love comes from full trust in Jesus Christ, being willing to follow Him wherever it leads and willing to serve as He did. Living this way comes from love and trust, not from trying to earn points, but it is the way that leads to God's reward.

While this teaching carries great promise, it is also a real challenge to us. Am I reckless in love, letting my life go in the process? Do I truly follow Jesus Christ, giving my life in service wherever he leads me?

Bill Samuel
