Spread for me a banquet of praise,
serve High God a feast of kept promises,
And call for help when you're in trouble -
I'll help you, and you'll honor me.
Psalm 50:14-15 (Message*)
This psalm has God stating how His people should act. This part comes after saying that their rituals and sacrifices are not what He seeks.
So what does the Lord desire of us? That we be full of praise, and that we keep our promises to Him. Pretty simple, but sometimes it seems difficult to follow in practice. We tend to become disgruntled and wind up blaming God for problems, explicitly or implicitly. And often we make great promises of faithfulness, but fail to live up to them.
When we live in the way the psalm tells us to, we set ourselves in right relationship with God. Then we're prepared to ask God for help in the right way, and God promises to respond.
This passage speaks of things we ought to be regularly examining ourselves in prayer about. Am I living a life full of praise to God? Am I faithful to God, keeping my promises to Him?
