I asked the Lord for help,
and he saved me from all my fears.
Psalm 34:4 (CEV*)
This verse is one of a number of Bible passages on the subject of our fears. We are told over and over again not to let our fears rule us, and that faith can free us from fear.
The scripture doesn't say we will be freed from risk, from trials or from difficulties. We will face them. What scripture does speak about is how we face these. We are not to face them with fear in our hearts. Facing these situations without fear transforms the situations, specifically the way we are in the situations.
We can not face all kinds of situations without fear through our own wills. Rather, we must set our wills aside and trust totally in God. God, we are told repeatedly in scripture, will then take away our fears. Not may, but will. If our fears are not taken away, we are not fully and completely trusting God. This complete faith and human fear simply cannot co-exist.
Lord, I pray that each of us place our trust completely in you, and that consequently we will live and act in your Spirit, and fear will have no hold on us. I thank you for your ability and your willingness to transform us into your image, and I pray that we will have the wisdom and humility to allow you to do it. In Jesus' name, amen.
